Component 01: Task 01
In this initial task. We started by
familiarizing ourselves with the interface and the variety of tools offered,
with particular emphasis on mastering the pen tool. This tool proved crucial
for crafting smooth, precise line art (Fig 1.0) , which we then enhanced by adding color (Fig 1.1).
Our first hands-on project involved designing simple characters inspired by
recognizable figures such as Pokémon and Hello Kitty. To refine my skills with
the pen tool, I created three distinct character designs and selected one to
develop fully by applying color, shadows, and highlights. This exercise
deepened my understanding of how lighting and shading can add depth and life to
flat images.
Component 02: Task 02
The second task focused on the fundamentals of composition. We were tasked with creating a simple background to complement the character design from Task 01. This required learning how to arrange visual elements to achieve balance and harmony within the scene. Using my character (Fig 1.1), I designed a fitting environment (Fig 2.0) that established context and mood (Fig 2.1). The final step was integrating the character and background into a collectible card layout (Fig 2.2). This challenged me to consider layout, spacing, and visual storytelling to produce a cohesive and engaging design.
Component 03: Task 03
In the third task, we explored animated composition using Adobe After Effects. Building on my earlier work with the character and background, I created a short animated sequence. This involved grasping basic motion graphics concepts such as keyframing and timing. I animated my character within the designed environment, introducing simple movements to enliven the scene. This project helped me develop foundational animation skills and demonstrated how motion can effectively enhance visual storytelling (Fig 3.0).
For this final project, I wanted to dabble into the world of metaphorical imagery, visuals that speak on their own and evoke deep, emotional and conceptual meanings. My inspiration came from a quote that I picked out of the options laid out to us. It resonated with my own creative experience:
“You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you're not passionate enough from the start, you'll never stick it out.”
Each scene visually interprets a section of the quote, allowing viewers to experience its message through metaphor rather than literal representation.
The first scene features a burning light bulb, symbolizing the ignition of an idea and the intense energy it takes to bring it to life. The second scene shows a girl being towered by a wall, illustrating the emotional weight of confronting a problem or injustice. In the third scene, a figure with black energy sprouting from its heart represents what happens when passion is ignited or is absent from the beginning. Finally, the last scene shows a lone person standing separately from a tightly clustered group, capturing the isolation required to persist when others may not understand your vision.
Color also plays an intentional role in this project. I used complementary color schemes in each scene, with the text color changing in response to the background. This enhances visual clarity and supports the emotional tone of each moment in the storyboard.
Through this piece, I wanted to reflect the internal struggles and personal drive that come with creative ambition, problem-solving, and resilience. It’s a reminder that without deep passion from the start, even the strongest ideas can lose momentum. The metaphors speak not just to artistic work, but to the broader experience of committing to something meaningful.
